CONCERTS COSTA BLANCA
.. in support of quality concerts in the Marina Alta
During May 2010 Wilhelmina Hardee and Mary Heaviland arranged a visit by students and professors from "The Curtis Institute of Music", Philadelphia, USA, one of the world's leading conservatories.
This sell-out concert at the Espai La Senieta in Moraira was followed by a harp and trumpet recital in September from two well-known Hungarian artists, promoted by Günter Klasen. Following this concert, Wilhelmina (Willy) and Mary approached John Deacon (ex-EMI and Philips Classics) who arranged to bring his friend Agustin Anievas back for a third appearance in the area. Anievas, (former professor of piano at Brooklyn College, University of New York) came in October 2010 and performed 3 sold-out and highly praised concerts of Chopin and Shumann at the Espai La Senieta. Thus, informally, did Concerts Costa Blanca come into being.
The authorities at the ayuntamiento of Teulada-Moraira drew our attention to their new 620-seat Auditorium, as yet unfinished, above the town, that was scheduled to open in the spring of 2011, and promised that the Curtis group, upon their return, could perform there. Perhaps many of you were there on May 25, 2011, when the director of “The Curtis Institute of Music”, Roberto Diaz (viola) together with 2 professors, Pamela Frank (violin) and Mikael Eliasen (head of the Curtis Opera Department) and five top students came to play in this new magnificent theatre, for a sell-out concert followed by an enthusiastic standing ovation.
Concerts Costa Blanca will continue to bring further high-quality concerts to the region, mostly by international professional musicians.
Concerts Costa Blanca have established close relations in Valencia with the Opera House (Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía) and the concert hall (Palau de la Musica) and during the last year some 11 group trips have been organised by John Deacon to both operas and concerts - Tosca (twice), La Cenerentola, Don Giovanni, Messiah, a cycle of 5 orchestral concerts by the excellent Valencia Orchestra under Yaron Traub and a recital by Lang Lang. Current plans - to end the 2011/2012 season - include Il Trovatore (June 4th) and a concert performance of Tristan und Isolde (June 28th).
Following a chance encounter at the Valencia Opera with the Intendant of the Teatro Real in Madrid John has entered into discussions with them for a possible group visit to Madrid in the spring of 2013 and which, it is hoped, will include a performance at the Teatro de la Zarzuela.
